Our Solution
Overall, our main goal in this project was to utilize food waste in restaurants, which would otherwise go to a landfill. An estimated 33 billion pounds of food is wasted each year globally, yet millions are left starving. We wanted to implement this idea into our solution, by turning food scraps into compost, used to grow healthy food for people in need. Below are the steps we took to solve just a little bit of this problem discovered in our community.

Compost
Donate PlantsThe plants we made through composting were donated to a food pantry called Friends In Deed. The food we donated went to people in need.
Existing SolutionsYou would think that there would be a million different ways to solve food waste in restaurants, but that is not true.
As you can see from the above, there are many solutions to food waste in general, and food waste in restaurants, but none of which are effective. |
How We Have Adapted Our Solution |
First, we were going to make the compost, and then after the food waste has completely turned into soil, we would grow the plants. We realized after this idea that it would take way to long to wait for the compost, so we just put in the half composted food waste mixed with soil to speed up the process.

Method of Collecting DataOur method of collecting data is to see how many pounds of food waste can go to how many pounds of fresh food, to see how many people the fresh food can feed. We will give a survey to Friends in Deed, asking about how this can help people in need.
